Primary Care Doctor Views Health from Patients’ Perspectives

April 10, 2025
Primary care physician Lwoodsky Charles, M.D., believes understanding his patients' perspectives is key to helping them live healthier lives.
Dr. Charles practices at Hackensack Meridian Health Primary Care in Lodi, New Jersey. He speaks English, Creole and French and is affiliated with Hackensack University Medical Center and Palisades Medical Center.
Partnering with patients in their health journey can lead to great results, he says.
“I want to understand how they manage life day-to-day and what gets in the way of healthy choices, like the demands of their careers,” Dr. Charles says.
Dr. Charles starts with the basics, explaining how to form good habits like eating a healthy diet and taking time to exercise. He wants to empower his patients to feel good about making informed decisions for their health and is always excited to celebrate when they accomplish a goal.
Born in Brooklyn, Dr. Charles grew up in Haiti until age 15. He moved to Irvington, New Jersey, for high school, and now it’s his hometown. He graduated from two New Jersey universities and then completed medical school in Grenada, the Caribbean.
Regarding diet and exercise, what’s your routine?
I ran track in high school and college and still run and walk briskly. I also do strength training. I believe in eating lots of fruits and vegetables for a well-rounded diet and try to watch my overall calorie intake.
What do you eat before a busy day in your practice?
For breakfast, I eat a yam, a sweet potato, a green banana and some white fish, all inspired by my Caribbean heritage.
What music plays in your headphones?
It’s usually the Florida-based Kompa band, Nu-Look, whose leader is from Cap-Haitien, Haiti. The sound is very rhythmic, part calypso and part R&B.
What would you like to do that you can’t do now?
I want to levitate and fly, with the freedom to transport or teleport myself wherever I want. I don’t like to be “bound.”
