Guillermo Hidalgo, M.D., F.A.S.N., division chief for pediatric nephrology at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, traveled to Mexico City in December 2022 to present to Latin American physicians about crescentic glomerulonephritis and steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome at the LXIX International Course of Nephrology at the Mexican Institute of Nephrology Research. Dr. Hidalgo's presentation came on the heels of an invitation in November to serve on the executive board of Saving Young Lives, an organization of the International Society of Nephrology.

Last year, Dr. Hidalgo traveled to Bogotá, Colombia and Singapore to speak about the latest treatments for acute kidney injury (AKI) and train physicians to treat the condition. The program in Colombia was the first of its kind held in the country. Dr. Hidalgo and the other course presenters welcomed participants from Central and South America to the two-day Saving Young Lives Project (SYL) workshop held at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, in June 2022. Saving Young Lives works in low-resource areas of the world to help establish and maintain hospital services for the care of AKI. Experts from across the globe provide training and educational activities in the community to improve awareness and equip local health practitioners to prevent and identify cases needing hospital care.

The combined pediatric nephrology program at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital is ranked Top 50 in the country in the 2022 U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals Report. As a network, Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health is a leader in research breakthroughs and exceptional outcomes for children with kidney disease and hypertension. The pediatric nephrology program plays a critical role in understanding and improving outcomes for children with renal disease. Both children’s hospitals serve as clinical coordinating centers for the world’s largest registry for crescentic glomerulonephritis, and an expanded acute kidney injury program at K. Hovnanian includes new interdisciplinary care that provides vital dialysis services.
