Michael Joseph Lim, M.D., to Build on Successes Implementing Groundbreaking Percutaneous Procedures
As new Chief of Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Dr. Lim will direct an already successful program to new levels. Hackensack University Medical Center is both a sought-after clinical testing ground and early adopter of game-changing devices and percutaneous techniques addressing cardiovascular disease.
Hackensack University Medical Center offers the newly FDA approved Shockwave sonic pressure wave therapy. This intravascular lithotripsy approach uses sonic pressure waves, also known as shockwaves, which pass through soft arterial tissue and preferentially disrupt calcified plaque by creating a series of micro-fractures. After the calcium has been cracked, the artery can be expanded at low pressure and a stent safely implanted to improve blood flow, with minimal trauma to normal arterial tissue.
The center also specializes in complex hybrid surgical cardiovascular procedures performed in the cath lab with a specialized, multidisciplinary team. For example, the center is one of the busiest in the country using percutaneous Ventricular Assist Devices (p-VADs). The center was the first site in the U.S. to implant the Impella 5.5 with SmartAssist short-term LVAD. The Impella 5.5 has been designed to be inserted into the left ventricle of the heart through either the axillary artery or directly into the anterior aorta during a minimally invasive PCI.
