Hackensack University Medical Center Among First to Introduce Minimally Invasive and Robotic Bypass Surgery

Heart and Vascular Hospital leads in minimally invasive cardiac surgery volumes

Mark B. Anderson, M.D., FACS is one of a team of renowned cardiovascular surgeons recruited by Hackensack University Medical Center from top heart care programs. He performs more than 90% of his surgical cases minimally invasively and ranks among the top 5% of physicians in the country for minimally invasive case volume.

Together, the experienced team at Hackensack University Medical Center took on 1,010 cardiac surgery cases in 2019. The team handles a high volume of isolated mitral valve repairs, aortic valve and mitral replacement, including percutaneous (TAVR and TMVR) procedures.

In addition to high traditional surgery volumes, Hackensack University Medical Center leads in minimally invasive and robotic approach specialization and volume. Hackensack recently installed two state-of-the-art hybrid operating rooms, including the Azurion with FlexArm installation, which was the first in the country and includes technologically advanced fusion imaging.

Bypass surgery is now offered minimally invasively at Hackensack University Medical Center thanks to robotics technology applied by Dr. Anderson. In the rare procedure, which is available at just a handful of medical facilities nationally, Dr. Anderson accesses the Left Internal Mammary Artery (LIMA) via robotics before proceeding to a minimally invasive bypass surgical approach. During the procedure, the internal mammary artery is placed onto the left anterior descending artery (LAD).
