Hackensack University Medical Center Now an Intuitive Training Center for Robotic Colorectal Surgery
Early technology adopter teaches surgical techniques and operational best practices for robotic colorectal surgery
Hackensack University Medical Center has been named a training site for the Intuitive da Vinci Robotic surgery system for the treatment of colorectal surgery.
Hackensack University Medical Center, an early adopter and clinical trial site since the first generations of robotic surgery systems, will soon welcome surgeons from across the country to observe procedures and learn robotic colorectal surgery techniques. Intuitive will work closely with Hackensack University Medical Center in the training program to meet growing demand for robotic surgery expertise.
“There’s definitely a payoff for investing in learning the techniques and adopting the technology,” Steven Lee-Kong, M.D., division chief of Colorectal Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, said. Trainees may include practicing colorectal surgeons as well as medical residents.
With benefits over open surgery including a shorter length of stay, less pain and improved outcomes, surgeon interest in learning robotic surgery techniques is growing, and Hackensack University Medical Center is stepping up to meet the need for educational expertise.
Visiting trainees will take away more than surgical proficiency. The center also teaches clinical care pathways that contribute to successful outcomes and streamline patient care. These include automated care pathways initiated at patient admission with proactive prompts built into the electronic medical record and antibiotic administration protocols that help reduce infections, for example.
Additionally, streamlined recovery protocols such as same-day release and stoma patient education in advance of surgery and hospital stay have the added benefit of reducing patient anxiety and increasing comfort and outcomes success.
