Multispecialty Care Eases Access and Coordination of Assessments and Interventions for Families Facing Memory Disorders
Facing a loved one’s cognitive disorder can be stressful and overwhelming for the whole family, and more families face these challenges each year. The number of New Jersey residents diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease is expected to jump to 210,000 by 2025, a 23% increase over 2017 figures.
To support the growing number of families facing memory challenges, the Center for Memory Loss and Brain Health brings together specialists and supportive staff who help families navigate treatment and connect with helpful resources.
The team specializes in the treatment of memory disorders, ranging from preventive and minimal cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and other conditions with cognitive impact.
The center provides clinical assessment and intervention by a geriatrician and neurologist, who assess each patient's cognitive health, multiple medical conditions as well as screening for high-risk medications, a counseling psychologists who can help each patient and family handle the emotional effects of dementia, physical and occupational therapists to optimize function. A social worker is available to connect families with additional resources. Wellness and support programs promote both patient and caregiver health, in line with the center’s focus on early diagnosis and prevention.
Patients also have the opportunity to engage in population-based and individual clinical and translational research. Research coordinators who manage clinical trials are readily available to discuss participation and assist with enrollment for the patients and families. The center serves as an education hub for interdisciplinary students, residents and fellows and partner with community-based organizations in the community education, evaluation and care of individuals with dementia and caregiver support.
