Hackensack Meridian Health Opens Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Laboratory at the Center for Discovery & Innovation (CDI)

First Lab of Its Kind in New Jersey to Focus on Pediatric Brain Tumor Research

Hackensack Meridian Health recently opened a pediatric neuro-oncology laboratory at the Hackensack Meridian Health Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI), the first laboratory of its kind in New Jersey.

The laboratory of Claire Carter, Ph.D., a CDI research scientist, Derek Hanson, M.D., a pediatric neuro-oncologist, and Timothy Vogel, M.D., Ph.D., a pediatric neurosurgeon, is made possible through Tackle Kids Cancer, a major successful fundraising effort run in collaboration with the New York Giants.

The new lab will focus on collaborative pediatric brain tumor research. Researchers are undertaking study of treatments for rare brain tumors, specifically embryonal tumors with multilayered rosettes (ETMR), which are exceptionally aggressive and usually affect children younger than four years of age.

The CDI is an academic-based entrepreneurial center that rapidly harnesses biomedical science innovations to restore patient health. The CDI supports research excellence through the recruitment of scientists, including physician scientists, with strong records of achievement; providing fully equipped facilities and resources; and establishing a culture of innovation that is dedicated to improving human health. A strong partnership between the CDI and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and Hackensack Meridian Health’s 17 network hospitals enables researchers and clinicians to work closely to direct biomedical sciences for high-impact patient care benefits.
