World’s Largest Registry and Extensive Outcomes-Focused Research on Pediatric Renal Disease

The pediatric nephrology program at Hackensack Meridian Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center plays a critical role in understanding and improving outcomes for children with renal disease. Both children’s hospitals serve as clinical coordinating centers for the world’s largest registry for crescentic glomerulonephritis.

The registry is expected to grow into an international registry in the near future and provide the opportunity for significant novel discoveries around crescentic glomerulonephritis in the coming years.

Through the clinical research registry and ongoing study of crescentic glomerulonephritis, pediatric nephrology specialists have discovered that pediatric patients with glomerulonephritis and crescents have multiple risk factors that lead to dialysis, and that for each 1% increase in the percentage of crescents, they have a 3% decrease in log odds of 1-year renal survival, and a 2% decrease in log odds of renal survival at last follow-up (3 years).

Guillermo Hidalgo, M.D., pediatric nephrologist at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, and his co-investigators are actively leading investigations on the causes of crescentic glomerulonephritis by different etiologies. They hope to identify risk factors associated with poor outcomes and treatments that are associated with improved long-term clinical outcomes.
