Aquablation Therapy Offers Patients a New Alternative for Enlarged Prostate Treatment

HUMC Is First Hospital in Northern New Jersey to Offer Innovative Therapy

Hackensack University Medical Center is the first hospital in northern New Jersey to offer Aquablation^® therapy — the first image-guided system that uses heat-free, robotic water ablation technology to provide precise, rapid treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate.

Aquablation offers several advantages over standard treatments, including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), GreenLight^™ Laser Therapy and UroLift^® procedures.

• Use of transrectal ultrasound probe and cystoscope provide a real-time view of the prostate from the inside and the outside, allowing urologists to remove sufficient tissue to maximize treatment outcomes.
• Treatment can be completed in under an hour for prostates of any size and shape.
• Pre-procedure planning allows urologists to review imaging, decide how much tissue should be removed, set treatment mapping parameters, and deliver consistent, reproducible results.
• The procedure is performed under anesthesia as an outpatient procedure or with an overnight hospital stay.
• There is no cauterization required, which leads to fewer irritative side effects such as urinary burning, frequency, incontinence, and urgency.
• Aquablation has a reduced risk of impaired ejaculatory and erectile function.

“Aquablation technology is different because it is a robotic, image-guided system that uses a water jet to remove prostate tissue, which offers advantages when compared to treatments that use thermal energy, require cutting out and cauterizing tissue, or do not remove any tissue at all,” said Ravi Munver, M.D., vice chairman and chief of Minimally Invasive & Robotic Urologic Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center’s Department of Urology.
