Education and support

Children and their families may attend education programs and support groups that fit their needs and provide valuable information and support. Lectures provide practical tools for diabetes management, fitness and understanding family dynamics. Children and parents also connect with other families whose children have diabetes and have opportunities to participate in social events. Healthy Futures is a 12-week program for boys and girls, ages 8-18, at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. This program addresses topics such as emotional and social eating, self-esteem, coping with social pressures, and learning to make healthy food choices. Our goal is to improve physical and emotional well-being in our participants in a fun and supportive atmosphere.

Transitioning to adulthood

Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital offers a program for patients, ages 18-22, as they transition from seeing a pediatric endocrinologist to an adult endocrinologist. This program allows the young adult to meet adult specialists and attend free support groups for young adults with diabetes. Once the patient is ready to make the move, the transition team will connect them with an adult endocrinologist and care team to ensure uninterrupted diabetes care into adulthood.
