Accurate, Stress-Free Lab Testing in New Jersey for Kids of All Ages

Our onsite pediatric laboratories at Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health are designed around a simple philosophy: a blood draw should be as smooth and stress-free as possible.

To achieve this, our team is composed entirely of certified phlebotomists with dedicated experience working with infants, children, and young adults up to age 21. Their experience is focused on ensuring a safe, efficient process with the goal of a successful first stick, minimizing discomfort for a better experience for everyone.

Common Pediatric Lab Tests We Perform

We offer a full range of lab services tailored to children, including some of the most frequently ordered tests:

  • Allergy testing
  • Bilirubin (total and direct)
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Follow-up PKU (phenylketonuria) newborn screening*
  • Lead level testing
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

*For best results, we recommend PKU (phenylketonuria) tests before 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.

After-Hours Bilirubin Testing Instructions

If your child needs a bilirubin test outside of regular lab hours and the Medical Plaza Building Laboratory is closed (after 7 p.m. weekdays, after 3 p.m. Saturdays, or any time on Sundays), please follow this process:

  • Your pediatrician should provide a prescription for a STAT Neonatal Bilirubin, Total test and include their contact phone number.
  • Go to the Admission Services Department (Spectra link 71520), Direct Admit 24/7 located on the 2nd floor of the Sanzari Children’s Hospital (i.e.2E-96).
  • A hospital phlebotomist will be called to draw the blood.
  • Results are typically available within one hour and will be called directly to your pediatrician.

This service is available to all patients regardless of insurance status. If the lab is out-of-network, families will not be billed.
