General Dental Practice Residency Program at JFK University Medical Center

Philosophy

At JFK, we believe in holistic Dentistry. We don’t just treat teeth, but we treat the patient as a whole, taking into account a persons general, mental, physical, and dental wellbeing.

The Program

Since 1970, JFK Medical Center has offered recent dental school graduates a general practice residency program in the Department of Dentistry. Providing state-of-the-art dental services for patients of all ages, the program concentrates on strengthening general dentistry techniques and preparing the resident for private practice.

Two residents are chosen each year to attend JFK’s one-year residency program via PASS and Match, the two national programs geared toward student placement. The residency program at JFK covers all phases of dentistry including:

  • Cosmetic dentistry
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • Periodontics
  • Endodontics
  • Pedodontics
  • And more

Under the supervision of over 50 general Dentist and specialists, the resident will graduate able to comfortably and confidently treat patients in each sub-specialty. Residents spend much of their time in a state-of-the-art dental facility that houses three dental operatories, a laboratory, a darkroom and a staff lounge area. Residents treat patients on a schedule geared to the individual resident’s speed and proficiency, ensuring the highest quality of dentistry. Medicaid is accepted and Hospital Care assistance program is offered to those eligible. A reduced fee schedule is also available to all other patients.

Rotations

While completing their residency at JFK, residents have the opportunity to rotate through many other departments throughout the Medical Center, promoting familiarity with all phases of hospital dentistry. Each resident spends time in Anesthesiology, Family Practice, Emergency Medicine and the Pathology department. There are also community service rotations available at Camp Kiddie Keep Well and nearby nursing homes.

In addition, residents are on call in the Emergency Department, giving them the opportunity to become more familiar with diagnosis and management of acute medical emergencies.

Continuing Education

Residents are also able to attend continuing education seminars and visit private practices for training in practice management. Formal lectures are presented by the Attending Dentists to supplement the clinical experience. Residents are also encouraged to attend local dental society events, study club meetings, and lectures to support their academic and professional interests.

Salary and Benefits

Residents receive a competitive salary, health insurance, malpractice insurance and 17 paid days off (including holidays, vacation, sick, personal and education days). Meals are also included for each resident.
