HUMC Pediatric Residency Residents

Learning Environment

  • Full service state-designated Children’s Hospital
  • General, Hem/Onc and Epilepsy Monitoring inpatient units
  • 48-bed Level III NICU
  • 15-bed PICU
  • Dedicated pediatric emergency room
  • Five pediatric ambulatory centers on or near campus
  • 30 pediatric subspecialties
  • 100+ full-time faculty in general pediatrics and all pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties
  • Resident representation on departmental and hospital committees
  • Procedure training with Infant and Vascular Access simulators to train all required procedures
  • Mock code each block
  • Protected Weekly Academic Half Day for education

Block Schedule

The block schedule for each academic year consists of 13 4-week blocks. Each year of training consists of the following:

First Year

5 blocks - Inpatient Day Team (General and Hem/Onc)
1.5 blocks - Inpatient Night Team (in 2 week segments)
1 blocks - Emergency Department
1 block - Well Baby Nursery
1 block - Adolescent Medicine
1 block - Child Development
0.5 block - Behavioral and Mental Health
1 block - Subspecialty Elective
1 block - Vacation

Second Year

1 block - PICU Days
0.5 block - PICU Night Team
1.5 blocks - NICU Days
0.5 block - NICU Night Team
1 block - Inpatient Night Team (in 2 week segments)
1 block - Emergency Department
1 block - Community Pediatrics/Advocacy
0.5 block - Behavioral and Mental Health
5 blocks - Electives/Individualized Curriculum
1 block - Vacation

Third Year

3 blocks - Inpatient Day Team Senior
