Program Details

Program Specifics

Our residents and faculty will be intimately involved in the evaluation, review and promotion process and our faculty relies upon constant feedback to create ongoing, positive changes. We believe that residents who shape their program remain active learners throughout their careers and become leaders and innovators at their future institutions.

Clinical and Academic Training

Our program rotations occur exclusively on the main campus of Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the primary clinical site for Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. A robust clinical surgical experience will allow every resident to exceed all the ACGME case requirements. Rotations include:

  • Acute Care Surgery/General Surgery
  • Bariatric Surgery
  • Breast Surgery
  • Colorectal Surgery/Endoscopy/Colorectal
  • Endocrine Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery/Robotics
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Transplant
  • Trauma
  • Vascular Surgery

Our program provides residents with numerous opportunities for participation in clinical research, practice management, quality improvement and hospital committees, and also includes protected nonclinical time for conferences, simulation and didactics.

Further, our Surgical Residency Program ensures that all residents have the necessary resources and tools to become a board-certified surgeon from the American Board of Surgery. Our graduates will be capable of practicing independently whether they choose to enter a surgical fellowship, private practice or have an academic career.

We also offer an option to extend surgical residency by one or two years after the PGY2 year to pursue intensive research opportunities, which is determined on an individual basis.

Our Philosophy

Education

A strong foundation is the key to any successful academic institution. At Hackensack University Medical Center, we have built our Surgical Residency program on that very principle. Our physicians and staff have developed a program that is strong within every subspecialty within Surgery, while allowing for unparalleled flexibility and input from residents. Resident feedback is a crucial part of the weekly discussions with faculty who foster an environment of teamwork and cooperation.

Residents shaping their own education through:

  • Protected conference time
  • Continual refinement of curriculum based on resident feedback
  • Priority in resident education
  • Team-based learning
  • Incorporation of state of the art simulation
  • Active participation on Departmental & Hospital wide committees
  • Ease of access to program director, assistant program director, program coordinator, chairperson
  • 1-on-1 mentorship with faculty member
  • Develop individual learning plans
  • Resident as Teacher workshops.

Residents play an integral role as educators to medical students and patients. Our residents will have the opportunity to receive formal education on how to become an effective teacher, communicator and leader.
