Internal Medicine Residency Program Overview | Ocean University Medical Center

Program Educational Goals

The goal of this internal medicine residency program is to prepare residents with appropriate skills, knowledge and attitude towards delivering safe patient care. Residents are required to show their ability and proficiency in the following ACGME competency areas: patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and system based practice. The educational settings in which the residents will be based are:
  • Ambulatory patient care with an emphasis on health promotion in diagnosis and managing chronic disease
  • Hospitalist Physician where the resident is responsible to manage complex patients in acute care settings with emphasis on quality and safety
  • Traditional Internal Medicine with residents managing patients in acute, chronic and extended care settings. Residents will work as a team towards a continuum of care for complex health conditions by coordinating with other specialists in the hospital
In addition, this program will train residents to become future leaders with a curriculum greatly concentrated on quality improvement and patient safety.

Conferences

Morning Report & Noon Lecture Series:

Morning report is daily from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Active discussions based on cases will be presented by the Internal Medicine leadership team as well as faculty from subspecialties. The objective of morning report is to teach residents how to approach typical as well as atypical symptoms through analysis of physical and laboratory findings using a systematic approach. Morning report is also an exercise in differential diagnosis, one that can touch upon a plethora of specialty categories such as: infectious disease, vascular, metabolic and congenital illnesses. Noon lectures will be held daily from noon to 1 p.m. This lecture series will focus on the program’s education goals and objectives as related to primary care as well as sub-specialty goals and objectives. Key members of the internal medicine faculty will present during these lectures as well as outside invited guests.

Ambulatory Curriculum:

The ambulatory curriculum will be based on both the John Hopkins modules as well as the Yale Ambulatory Curriculum. One morning report a week will be dedicated to an ambulatory lecture. Two procedure clinics per year will be conducted in the outpatient facilities.

Journal Club:

Held once a month at various locations. Residents will participate in a 45 minute discussion that will help to develop critical thinking skills and tools for reviewing the latest publications on evidence based medicine.

Rotation Schedule

The academic year for the Internal Medicine Program follows a 4 + 1 block structure. The 4 + 1 schedule ensures varied times and days for patients to schedule appointments with their doctor. This is essential for building continuous long term relationships. In addition, the 4 + 1 schedule allows residents to see patients within the same week if they are acutely ill, as well as follow up at 4 weeks and 3 months which are the most common follow-up times for patients with chronic conditions. Core rotations are divided up into 10-4 week blocks followed by 1 week of an ambulatory care block. The 4 + 1 model provides residents a clear separation from in-patient and outpatient responsibilities.

PGY-1 Schedule

  • Inpatient floors-26 weeks
  • ICU- 12 weeks
  • Cardiac- 2 weeks
  • Nephrology- 2 weeks
  • Ambulatory – 4/-5 weeks
  • Elective- 2 weeks

Research Opportunities

Ocean University Medical Center embraces the idea that residents in Internal Medicine should participate in a structured research curriculum. Every resident trained is expected to have good knowledge and understanding of research study design and methodology including epidemiology and biostatistics. This curriculum introduces residents to a hypothesis-driven research. During this curriculum, residents learn about literature searching, abstract preparation, critical appraisal, medical writing and basic biostatistical techniques like research designs, descriptive statistics, data gathering, graphical display of data types of statistical data, choosing of sample size, etc. By involving residents in an evidence-based research curriculum, we believe this will enhance their skills in critical evaluation of published data, generate new ideas, and help in career selection and development. Every year residents are expected to present their research findings at the annual resident research symposium. The purpose of resident research training is to translate and apply the evidence-based knowledge gained for better patient care delivery.
