Patient Actor Program
Would you like to make an impact on how our physicians in training provide care to the community? Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center is encouraging members of the community to enroll in the
Patient Actor Program. Patient actors do not require any prior acting skills and are specially trained to assist with the instruction, practice and assessment of medical examination skills of physicians in training (medical students, fellows, residents, and other health care providers). Patient actors provide constructive feedback to physicians through one-on-one, small group or large group sessions that may occur in a classroom or clinical exam room.
Patient actors help with building and evaluating clinical skills in training physicians, including:
- Physical examination
- Communication
- History taking
- Patient counseling
- Patient education
Patient actors must be able to respond exactly as a real patient would, and only as that patient, not as themselves. Participants must be able to sustain the patient's character and condition consistently throughout the time spent in that role. Stipends are provided for each session.
