Addiction Treatment Insurance Coverage

If you or a loved one are considering changing your life through an addiction treatment program, no doubt you have plenty of questions on your mind. Among them, does insurance cover rehab? Addiction treatment insurance coverage may even be the question at the forefront of your mind.

If you have health insurance, it typically covers substance use disorder treatment and mental health services. All plans are different, though, so it’s helpful to contact your provider to understand your addiction services benefits and which rehab providers are in-network and covered by your insurance plan.

Addiction treatment insurance coverage for inpatient and outpatient services varies by plan.

It's important to know what your policy covers regarding addiction treatment services. This information is readily available from providers, so it’s helpful to ask questions to get a sense of how things are covered by your insurance.

It is helpful to ask your insurance provider:

  • Does my plan cover addiction treatment benefits?
  • What benefits are included in my plan?
  • Will it cover detox, rehab and/or outpatient treatment?
  • What length of stay at an inpatient rehab center is covered?
  • What documentation do I have to provide to get reimbursed?
  • What is my deductible, and how will payments be made to my addiction treatment program?

Inpatient Addiction Treatment Insurance Coverage

Most plans will cover a portion of the cost of inpatient care services, such as detox, residential rehab programs and partial hospitalization programs. Deductibles and copayments may need to be met before full coverage can be applied.

Outpatient Addiction Treatment Coverage

Health insurance plans often cover outpatient services, too, but sometimes at a lower rate than inpatient treatment, since it is less intensive. This may include individual therapy sessions with licensed counselors as well as therapeutic group sessions, in which patients learn about their addiction and discuss how to deal with cravings and relapse triggers.

The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, aimed to make health insurance coverage more accessible and affordable for individuals and families in the U.S.

As part of this legislation, insurance providers have to provide mental health and substance use services as part of an essential benefit package. This means that most health plans are now required to cover a portion of the cost for addiction treatment services and meet minimum essential benefits requirements.

But the amount and type of coverage may vary from plan to plan.

You may be eligible for Get Covered NJ, the State of NJ Health Insurance Marketplace,1 for more affordable health insurance plans.

Of course, not everyone has health insurance. If you do not have health insurance, don’t let that stop you from getting the care you need to treat your addiction or substance use disorder.

There are a few other options that some people may use to pay for addiction treatment services:
