Gyroscopic Radiosurgery Integrated with Magnetic Resonance Imaging
World’s First to Offer Integrated Innovations
ZAP-X is an advanced form of radiation therapy and is the next generation of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Through a painless outpatient procedure, and without an invasive head frame, anesthesia or incision, you can return home after treatment with no recovery period.
Integrating Synaptive MRI technology with ZAP-X is a game-changer. The combination provides physicians with real-time imaging immediately before the treatment. Additionally, it is quieter than other MRIs and the ONLY DEDICATED BRAIN MRI designed to specifically image the nervous system. Bringing these technologies together provides the most precise, accurate and rapid treatment possible for many pituitary and brain tumors, as well as other intracranial disorders.
The Dr. Robert H. and Mary Ellen Harris ZAP-X Center for Noninvasive Neurosurgery at the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center is the world’s first center to integrate ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® with Synaptive’s Brain-Only Silent MRI. The Synaptive MRI, Zap-X and the Center were made possible by a very generous gift from the Golden Dome Foundation and Mrs. Mary Ellen Harris.
Conditions We Treat
Considered an alternative to surgery, ZAP-X is a dedicated radiation therapy system used to treat patients with:
- Acoustic neuroma
- Meningioma
- Pituitary adenoma
- Recurrent glioma
- Brain metastasis
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Cerebral arteriovenous malformations
- Possible tremor
How does it work?
ZAP-X is an alternative to brain surgery and conventional types of radiation therapy. Guided by high-definition imaging and computer-controlled robotics, ZAP-X delivers high doses of radiation to tumor tissue with 1 mm precision. Hundreds of uniquely angled radiation beams are directed at the tumor, with very little radiation affecting nearby healthy tissue. As a result, patients have a lower risk of side effects.
Integrating Synaptive MRI technology, an option only available at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, offers real-time, point-of-care imaging feedback to physicians to ensure therapeutic success.
In addition to noninvasive radiation delivery with precision accuracy, ZAP-X/Synaptive technology integration allows clinical teams to shorten the time lapse between diagnosis and treatment. It also provides a more supportive treatment experience as the MRI is mostly silent.
What to Expect
ZAP-X is typically given over one to five 20-minute sessions, with at least one day off between sessions. There is little to no recovery time and patients can return quickly to their regular activities. Benefits include:
- No incisions
- No pain
- Minimal number of treatment sessions
- No need for anesthesia
- Outpatient care that enables patients to return to the comfort of their homes the same day as their treatment
About Our Location
The ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® with Synaptive’s Brain-Only Silent MRI and the Dr. Robert H. and Mary Ellen Harris ZAP-X Center for Noninvasive Neurosurgery at the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center were made possible by a very generous donation from the Golden Dome Foundation and Mrs. Mary Ellen Harris.
The Golden Dome Foundation, a non-profit organization that was founded in 2015 by the late Dr. Robert H. Harris and his wife – the organization’s current president – Mary Ellen Harris, to support charitable causes. Over the span of several years, Golden Dome Foundation has invested heavily in Hackensack Meridian Health medical centers, including Bayshore Medical Center, Ocean University Medical Center, and Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
“My husband dedicated his life to advancing research to improve the quality of life for people facing diseases and disorders. Making this gift and expanding his legacy by purchasing this life-saving technology is the carrying on of his life’s work. The community needs access to the best care possible and I am honored and humbled to be able to play a part in ensuring that it can be provided to those in need. I hope that this new equipment helps a lot of people.”
