Treatment for Knee Pain and Knee Replacement Surgery in New Jersey

What is Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement surgery is a common procedure for people whose joint pain or arthritis makes it hard to move or stay active. In New Jersey, our orthopedic surgeons perform two main types of knee replacement: partial and total.

  • Partial Knee Replacement: repairs only the damaged area of the joint, leaving healthy bone and tissue in place. This option can help maintain more natural movement when arthritis is limited to one part of the knee.
  • Total Knee Replacement: also called knee arthroplasty, replaces the entire knee joint with a metal and plastic implant. It’s often recommended when knee damage is more widespread from conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or past injuries.

Both types of surgery aim to reduce pain, improve mobility, and help you return to daily activities more comfortably.

Understanding the Knee Joint

The knee joint consists of several bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The joint connects the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and patella (kneecap). Its stability relies on four ligaments:

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
  • Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)
  • Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)
  • Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)

Cushioning and shock absorption are provided by the meniscus, a cartilage pad located between the femur and tibia, which also aids in distributing weight and improving joint congruency. The quadricep and hamstring muscles, located in the thigh, cross the knee joint and are essential for movement and stability.

Robotic Surgery for Total Knee Replacement

Developed by international teams of engineers and surgeons, including three from Hackensack Meridian Health, robotic-assisted approaches offer several benefits over traditional total knee replacement:

  • Cuts in the bones are more precise, allowing the surgeon to place the implant components in just the right position.
  • Uses X-rays or CT scans to create a 3D model of the patient’s knee to ensure the most precise implant fit.
  • The robot can be used to achieve exact implant placement and proper size to every patient’s personal anatomy and the hope is this will decrease revision surgery rates.

We were also one of four health systems in the country to participate in a clinical trial for robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery to treat severe osteoarthritis. This FDA-approved system uses 3D CT scans to select the ideal implant and define the optimal implant placement and alignment based on your unique anatomy.
