Chief of Orthopedic Oncology Brings Specialized Expertise

Francis Robert Patterson, M.D., chief of Orthopedic Oncology at Hackensack University Medical Center and chief of the Skin and Sarcoma Division at John Theurer Cancer Center, is a leading expert in benign and malignant bone and soft-tissue tumors of the musculoskeletal system, metastatic bone disease, allograft and endoprosthetic reconstructions, custom implants and limb-preserving surgery, including complex limb salvage after failed joint reconstruction surgeries or trauma.

Dr. Patterson leads a multidisciplinary team at Hackensack University Medical Center involved in precision therapies, research, trials and training. He has taught more than 120 residents and 10 fellows during his 20+-year career. Currently, he is participating in several ongoing sarcoma and soft tissue tumor clinical trials, as well as 12 residents and a fellow.

The recipient of numerous academic and professional awards, including the 2012 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, Dr. Patterson has been named on various Top Doctors lists for Orthopaedic Surgery and for Cancer by Castle Connolly and Inside Jersey magazine for the last several years. He has presented internationally on his research and has been published extensively. Dr. Patterson has been active with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, serving on its Musculoskeletal Tumors and Disease Evaluation Subcommittee. He is a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Association, Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, Connective Tissue Oncology Society, and the Children’s Oncology Group.
