Application Process

Prospective residents must have satisfactorily completed an approved educational program at an accredited school of medicine.

For PGY-I candidates, JFK Medical Center accepts applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and participates in the National Resident Matching Program. All PGY-1 positions are offered through the NRMP. The deadline for applications to the Family Medicine Residency Program is December 31 of each year, but prospective residents are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Interviews are offered on a rolling basis and will occur between November and January.

Requirements for Application: JFK Family Medicine Residency Program

Applications must be submitted via ERAS – no paper applications will be accepted for PGY1 positions. All applications are reviewed with preference given to applicants who meet the following criteria:
  • Graduated from medical school within the past 3 years.
  • Passed all USMLE Steps on the first or second attempt by the NRMP deadline for rank order lists (usually mid-February). Priority is given to applicants who passed all exams on the first attempt.
  • International Medical graduates must fulfill all ECFMG requirements.
  • At least one year of hands-on clinical experience in the United States as a medical student or resident in a primary care training program within the past two years. This must be a structured, supervised, and formally evaluated experience.
  • Three letters of recommendation with at least 2 from physicians who supervised clinical experience in the United States.
  • Must meet all requirements for a New Jersey residency training permit. College transcripts are required to document completion of New Jersey premedical requirements. College transcripts should be sent directly from the college or university.
  • Any applicant from a non-LCME, non-AOA accredited medical school must complete didactic training (first 2 years of basic sciences) where the school is authorized to confer a medical degree.
  • Personal interviews are required and will be conducted in person or virtually based on the recommendations of the AAMC and depending on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. Applicants who are selected for an interview will be contacted via email. Due to the large volume of applications, we are not able to provide status updates on applications. Directions to JFK University Medical Center

  • From New York or Newark, take the New Jersey Turnpike South to Exit 11. Pick up the Garden State Parkway North to Exit 132, making a right off the exit (Route 27). At the fourth light (James Street), make a right and the hospital is a short distance on the left.
  • Or, if you take the Garden State Parkway South to Exit 132, continue as above, except note that you will enter Route 27 past the first traffic light.
  • From Philadelphia, take the New Jersey Turnpike North to Exit 10 leading to Route 287 to Route 1 North. At the Menlo Park Mall, on the right, going around a jughandle onto Parsonage Road. Continue straight past the mall and underpass to a traffic light at Route 27 (landmarks are the Rite Aid on the left, Dunkin Donuts on the right). Parsonage Road becomes James Street and the hospital is a short distance on the left.
  • Once you reach the hospital, follow the Emergency Entrance Road. On the right hand side you will see 2 one-story buildings; Family Medicine is behind the Behavioral Health Building.
  • Park in Parking Lot G.
