About Us

• A community hospital program in suburban, Central New Jersey, established in 1976. The Jersey Shore, Pocono Mountains, New York, Philadelphia — all within driving distance. Close to many major highways and Amtrak trains for ease of commuting.
• Only primary care residency in hospital with no competition from other residents. Work directly with hand-picked attendings from a large medical staff with all specialties represented for excellent teaching.

• Strong biopsychosocial curriculum including lecture series, as well as a one-on-one teaching and patient/family evaluations with our full time Behavioral Scientist.
• Focus on resident wellness including monthly resident groups with our Behavioral Scientist to discuss topics such as managing fatigue, reducing stress, and preventing burnout. Each resident creates an individual wellness plan, reviewed periodically to ensure health and wellbeing during residency training.
• Outstanding Faculty. Dr. Winter, Director since 1989, has a Master of Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University and is Past President of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD). He is also a past member of the Residency Review Committee for Family Medicine. Dr. Bhattacharyya is past president of the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Kandula was previously trained in OB/GYN, and is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. Dr. Carnes has fellowship training in geriatrics and is Board Certified in Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Metz has a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Sports Medicine, and Dr. Milne has a CAQ in Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Patel is trained in and teaches Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. Dr. Mendoza completed a Primary Care Clinician Research Fellowship in Community Health at Columbia University where she obtained a master degree in epidemiology and is the Family Medicine Clerkship director for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Dr. Walter serves as our ambulatory care pharmacist and as Clinical Assistant Professor for Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. Dr. Kumar brings her years of experience as a residency faculty member to JFK and is also on the clinical skills faculty at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.
• Ample elective time for individual interests as well as ability for resident input in planning and tailoring many rotations to suit individual needs and learning styles.
• Curriculum with enhanced teaching of how to practice in a Patient-centered Medical Home including Electronic Medical Record, team huddles, and Group Visits in the Family Medicine Center for pregnant patients. Unique rotations in Urgent Care and a palliative care experience added to the Geriatric rotation. Night float for upper year residents Sunday through Thursday, giving the night shift resident weekends off. Thus, upper year residents do not take weeknight call.
• Strong Obstetrics and Maternal/Child Health curriculum – obstetrical patients are seen in the Family Medicine Center, not a “clinic” environment. Babies are kept in the practice, enabling excellent family continuity. OB/GYN teaching is done by both JFK Family Medicine faculty and OB/GYN faculty. Faculty are available full time on-site for deliveries, consultation, and procedures in the Family Medicine Center.
• Housing Allowance is awarded to every resident to help defray housing costs – $200 each month [$2400/year] – in addition to salary, plus an excellent benefit package.
• Training on site at Family Medicine Center in minor surgery, colposcopy, IUD, Nexplanon® and endometrial biopsy. Training with point-of-care ultrasound technology is also offered.
• Weekly procedure clinic as well as a colposcopy and GYN procedure clinic.
• Weekly musculoskeletal clinic at the Family Medicine Center with a concentration on Sports Medicine. Joint injection under ultrasound guidance taught here as well.
• Special “clinics” devoted to specific patient populations, for specialized learning opportunities regarding adolescent and complex patients. Specialized training in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is also offered throughout residency.
• Excellent balance of inpatient, nursing home, and ambulatory care, didactic and clinical experiences designed to prepare residents for the diverse practice of Family Medicine in the changing healthcare marketplace, including a strong emphasis on practice management.
• Emphasis on the use of medical informatics in research, teaching, and patient education – residents provided a subscription to Up To Date, ePocrates, and a $200 allowance towards a device of their choosing capable of operating ePocrates Essentials. Strong research curriculum taught by Family Physicians emphasizes development of life-long learning skills.

Our Family Medicine Center

Located on the grounds of JFK Medical Center, the Family Medicine Center (FMC) functions as a Patient-centered Medical Home, offering comprehensive health care to our community’s diverse population. Services range from prenatal care to geriatric medicine, including minor surgery and many other procedures. We have over 25,000 visits per year including approximately 225 deliveries that serve as the foundation for a strong Women’s Health and Pediatric experience in our FMC. In addition to the faculty and residents, the FMC’s health care team consists of nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants, clinical pharmacists, dietician, social worker, care manager, project manager and office personnel. Collectively, we all work together to create a vibrant and dynamic teaching practice for our residency.
