Program Details
Curriculum
The Pharmacy Practice Residency is a one-year postgraduate training program (PGY-1), full time, starting in July. Four positions are available. The pharmacy welcomed its first PGY-1 resident in 2018 and is accredited by ASHP.
Learning experiences are 4 to 6 weeks in length. The learning experiences provide a wide range of opportunities and are flexible to fit the needs and interests of each resident. Residents are involved in various clinical activities, including therapeutic drug monitoring, medication error reporting, attending various clinical rounds with the medical team, patient counseling, as well as monitoring drug management programs. The resident has the opportunity to attend and present at P&T meetings and participate in the Rutgers Teaching Certificate Program. The resident will also have the opportunity to interact with pharmacy students on their IPPE and APPE rotations. The staffing commitment requirement for the program is every third weekend.

Research
Residents are expected to participate and complete a research project during their training. They work closely with a research mentor to develop the project throughout the academic year. Residents are also expected to present a poster at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and a platform presentation at the Eastern States Pharmacy Residency Conference, along with additional research presentation opportunities to help hone their presentation and analytical skills. Each resident is expected to create a manuscript suitable for publication prior to the end of the academic year.
In response to past resident feedback, the program transitioned to a reverse research model (aka “flipped” research model). Residents select an IRB-approved research project so that they can focus on data collection and analysis during the first half of the residency year. This approach enables the residents to present completed research at the annual ASHP Midyear conference and promotes successful manuscript development and submission for publication in the second half of the year.
Mentorship Program
At the beginning of the year, residents are encouraged to meet all of the preceptors and select a formal mentor. Once a mentor is selected, residents have the autonomy to schedule regular meetings throughout the residency year. These meetings provide a safe and confidential space for residents to seek advice, explore career paths, and develop professional skills. Mentors can share their experiences and offer valuable perspectives on the pharmacy profession. In addition, residents can receive personalized feedback to help them identify areas for growth.
