Message from the Chairman

Our focus is on excellence in training, research, patient experience and quality outcomes, for not only standard surgical conditions, but also, the most advanced surgical problems. We aspire to be leaders of change in our discipline. We believe that we are creative in our solution to make things better for our residents, faculty/staff, and most importantly, our patients. We are courageous and do our best to do the right thing at the right time for the right reason. We are compassionate toward our approach to treating our patients and interacting with our team members, students and residents. We are collaborative and teach teamwork in our lectures and by our examples. As a result, all members in the Department of Surgery are connected to something that transcends the individual. We are a department that is working to change the world for our patients and staff by one thought, one action, or one miracle at a time.

We do our best to live above the line. That means that we assume the best in people and their intentions. We listen to each other in order to understand before trying to be understood. We confront issues directly to ensure each other's success and that of our patients. We model our beliefs in our actions and trust one another. We are accountable to ourselves and each other. Finally, we support our decisions and those of the hospital and system, so that all may enjoy success, most specifically our patients.

A Message from the Program Director

As an ACGME accredited General Surgery residency program, we are excited to continue to build on the excellence in General Surgery at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Our program’s goal is to prepare our residents to practice safe, competent surgical and medical care for patients in all major areas of general surgery. Our philosophy is that you will leave Jersey Shore University Medical Center with a solid foundation in general surgery that will prepare you for board certification and to practice as a general surgeon or pursue subspecialty training.

Our faculty is the cornerstone of our program. We have faculty across 17 service lines who are board certified, active in scholarly activity and experienced teachers that cover all aspects of general surgical education. Residents work under the guidance and supervision of our dedicated faculty to provide state of the art medical care to our ethnically, culturally and economically diverse patient population. Faculty have published multiple peer-reviewed articles, lead major clinical trials and are involved in many research projects that residents may choose to participate in. Quality improvement and patient safety is a major focus of the department with both faculty and resident involvement in quality improvement committees and projects.

With approximately 16,000 surgeries performed in 17 state-of-the-art operating rooms annually, our patient volume and variety is on par with major medical centers throughout the United States. We are a state-of-the-art Level I Trauma Center for the Southern Region of Hackensack Meridian Health. Residents have access to more than 1,600 adult and pediatric trauma patients (Currently applying for Level 1 Pediatric Trauma designation). In addition, our Center for Robotic Surgery is equipped with three of the da Vinci Xi Surgical Systems that provide residents with the opportunity to become certified in the use of specialized computer-assisted minimally invasive surgical techniques.

The program prides itself on being able to offer complete training at Jersey Shore University Medical Center with the exception of the required transplant experience that will be held at Hackensack University Medical Center. Utilizing a team-based approach, residents will rotate through all areas of General Surgery including Acute Care Surgery, Bariatric & Endoscopy, Breast, Colorectal & Colonoscopy, Critical Care, Surgical Endocrine, Gastrointestinal, Breast, Hepato-biliary & Pancreatic, Oncology, Pediatric, Plastics, Thoracic, Trauma - Adult and Pediatric, and Vascular Surgery. Minimally Invasive Surgery and Robotics is practiced on all teams and both Cardiothoracic and Transplant are PGY 3 rotations. The curriculum follows the SCORE standard and is supplemented with multi-disciplinary conferences, tumor boards, M & M, specialty conferences, journal club, and Grand Rounds. Residents have strictly enforced protected time to attend all required didactics on Wednesday mornings. Residents are also supported in an elective of their choice in their fourth year.
