Hackensack University Medical Center Offers Most Advanced Treatment Options for Heart Failure

Hackensack University Medical Center's team of five advanced heart failure cardiologists hold a combined 100 years experience. With this level of experience, the center is able to embrace the latest treatments for heart failure, including LVADs as a bridge or alternative to transplant and the new Bioventrix device implant.

The center, also home to experienced LVAD surgeons including Dr. George Batsides, who has completed more LVAD procedures than any other cardiac surgeon in New Jersey, was recently approved by The Joint Commission Disease-Specific Care Certification program for excellence in Ventricular Assist Device care.

As a site for the American Less Invasive Ventricular Enhancement (ALIVE) clinical trial, Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center recently performed the first Bioventrix device implant in New Jersey, second for the New York metro region.

The Bioventrix device offers a new minimally invasive option, as opposed to open heart surgery, for patients with left ventricular scars or aneurysms and symptomatic heart failure. Designed to reduce the wall stress of the left ventricle and stop the progression of heart failure caused by formation of a left ventricle scar or aneurysm, the Bioventrix procedure is performed off-pump, without a ventriculotomy, through the internal jugular and a 4-cm thoracotomy, by an interventional cardiologist and cardiac surgeon using the Revivent TC System.

The procedure addresses how changes in the natural shape and pressure inside the LV can create stress on the heart. Anchors placed internally and externally exclude scar tissue from healthy tissue to reduce stress on the left ventricle. This shapes the heart back to a more typical form and size, with the potential effect of improved pumping efficiency and increased blood flow to the entire body.
