Hackensack University Medical Center Urology Team Seeks to Improve Patient Outcomes in UTIs

Two Investigative Teams Conduct Research in Treatments for Urinary Tract Infections Among Women

In collaboration with the Center for Discovery and Innovation, the Hackensack University Medical Center Department of Urology is conducting studies on advancements in treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI).

UTIs and Antimicrobial Resistance
Debra Fromer, M.D., Chief, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, is investigating the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens causing recurrent UTIs in female patients.

UTIs are among the most frequent bacterial infections and, if not treated appropriately, can progress to more invasive infections. Treatment with antibiotics can lead to the rise of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens. A major clinical concern is the increased risk of harboring AMR pathogens among individuals with recurrent UTIs.

Determining the Source of Infections
Hackensack University Medical Center will conduct a novel prospective study to determine the source of these AMR pathogens in women in the New Jersey and New York region with recurrent UTIs by determining the genetic phenotypes of organisms colonized in the urinary, genital and gastrointestinal tracts.

Antimicrobial resistance continues to increase at a rapid rate. As the medical community looks for ways to curb this trend, research on the source of recurrent UTIs will be invaluable.
