Disinfectant Pros and Cons: Hydrogen Peroxide vs Quats
By Mark Mcinnes
For most decision-makers in the cleaning industry, the purchase of a disinfectant is one of the most challenging, yet important, decisions the job requires of them. The list of active ingredients available for disinfectants is lengthy and full of trade-offs, which involve finding the balance between the right amount of infection prevention properties while protecting the health of staff, building occupants, and the environment.
Four Secrets of Successful Infection Programs
By Mark McInnes
The most effective infection prevention programs incorporate a well-thought-out plan, the right products for the facility’s goals, continuous monitoring and most importantly, a consistent and effective process. Over the years, I’ve worked with all different types of facilities to create infection prevention programs from scratch or improve existing infection prevention programs with better chemistry and education. Neglected Environmental Services Training Will Cost Your Business
By Arthur Coleman
As I reflect on the earlier years of my environmental services and facility maintenance career, I recall undergoing training with an emphasis on individual development. We were taught if we failed to plan, we planned to fail. Sadly, in some organizations, increased profit and productivity has led to reduction of staff with the expectation that remaining workers maintain the same, and sometimes greater, workload. Under this scenario, many organizations no longer see the need for ongoing staff training.
Protect Your Workers From Head To Toe

Mark Warner, education manager with ISSA’s Cleaning Management Institute (CMI), recalls a worker who wore sneakers to strip a floor. The worker’s sneakers and shoes became soaked with the stripping solution, but he finished the job without stopping to change his footwear, which eventually dried.
Later, when he removed his shoes and socks, he realized he had made a huge mistake. Several layers of his skin had peeled off with them. The worker had severe burns and needed skin grafting.
Technology That Disinfects Surfaces in Record Time
The faster an item can be properly disinfected the better. Understanding this, a group of researchers are in the process of creating a technology that can disinfect a surface in less than five minutes by way of a uber-thin coating comprised of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes, reports Forbes. Purdue University researchers hope to fuse the tiny coating into a number of products associated with the commercial cleaning industry — vinyl flooring, toilet seats, door handles and wall coverings to name a few. The coating is assimilated into materials using an electrical field that lights up the object, then kills harmful bacteria that are present. The coating is shadowless and pliable.
