It’s normal for teens to experience acne during adolescence. In moderate to severe cases, hormonal treatment may be necessary to reduce acne breakouts.

At Hackensack Meridian Health, we partner with pediatricians to medically treat a number of mood disorders, including depression, anxiety and ADHD that can result in behavior issues at home and school.

At K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, this is managed by adolescent medicine and child/adolescent psychiatry. At Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, mood disorders are managed by child/adolescent psychiatry, while ADHD is managed by both developmental pediatrics and child/adolescent psychiatry.

Chronic fatigue and pain can impact teens and young adults physically and emotionally. We treat symptoms medically and work closely with pediatric rheumatology. 

At Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, patients are advised to be treated for chronic fatigue through the pediatric rheumatology program and chronic pain through the pediatric pain and palliative care program.

Our adolescent medicine physicians evaluate and medically treat teens and young adults for eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. We have a multidisciplinary team of social workers who refer and coordinate care with community therapists, dieticians, and psychiatrists.

During adolescence, hormonal changes could lead to many menstrual issues. Our adolescent medicine specialists at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital help teens and young adults manage reproductive concerns such as irregular periods, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), heavy menstrual bleeding, and lack of menstrual bleeding.

We also offer birth control counseling, including contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices, and specialize in contraceptive care for medically complex adolescents.
