Cardio-Oncology: Protecting Health During Cancer Treatment
While cancer survival rates have improved with more advanced treatments, chemotherapy and radiation therapy can sometimes cause heart damage, particularly in patients already at risk for heart disease. At Hackensack Meridian Health, our Cardio-Oncology teams are dedicated to ensuring that you complete your cancer treatment while minimizing any impact on your heart.
Our oncologists collaborate closely with cardiologists who specialize in the care of cancer patients to provide seamless support before, during, and after cancer treatment. All cancer patients undergo regular heart function screenings and assessments throughout their treatment journey.
We use state-of-the-art cardiac diagnostics to monitor and protect your heart, including:
- Echocardiography (ECG or EKG)
- Cardiac catheterization, a minimally invasive procedure to assess your heart’s blood vessels
- Electrophysiology testing, used to evaluate the electrical signals regulating your heartbeat
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can sometimes lead to cardiotoxicity, a side effect that damages the heart’s muscle or electrical system. Cardiotoxicity can result in heart issues during treatment or even years afterward, such as:
- Arrhythmia: Irregular heartbeat
- Congestive heart failure: Weak heart muscle affecting efficient blood pumping
- Coronary artery disease: Clogged arteries due to fatty deposits
- Heart attack: Blockage of blood flow to the heart
- Valvular heart disease: Malfunction of heart valves, affecting blood flow
All cancer patients can benefit from our Cardio-Oncology program. Regular heart assessments ensure that our cardiac specialists can work closely with your oncology team to detect and address any heart-related issues early, even reversing potential damage.
For cancer survivors, especially those treated as children, ongoing monitoring for heart disease is essential. Our team offers cardiac care to help you maintain optimal heart function throughout your recovery and beyond.
