NJ Primary Care Doctor Models a Healthy Lifestyle for Patients

Tarun Kakumanu, D.O., holds his dog while leaning up against a step ladder.

Living in southern India until he was 13 years old and moving approximately every two years has given Tarun Kakumanu, D.O., the ability to meet and connect with all kinds of people—just like those he now sees as a family medicine practitioner.

After completing his residency at Ocean University Medical Center in 2024, he’s fulfilling a dream that began after graduating from the University of Maryland. While on a weeklong mission trip to the small village of Alto de Cristo, Panama, he realized that so many people can’t access health care, and that has consequences.

“This experience drove me to pursue a career in medicine with a commitment to providing compassionate care and ensuring that every patient receives the attention and support they deserve,” he says. “My goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those I serve.”

As a family medicine doctor, Dr. Kakumanu—known as “Dr. T” by his patients—tries to model good nutrition and exercise habits for his patients. “I do cardio, strength and flexibility at the gym, and I work with my patients who ask me about nutrition, weight control and exercise,” he says. “I create a personalized plan if they want it.”

What sport would you play in the Olympics?

Tennis. I’m passionate about it and watch almost every Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournament each year. (The ATP Tour is a worldwide tour of the world’s best tennis stars.) I played varsity tennis in high school and continued in college with club tennis. Although I’ve been away for a while, I’m starting to pick tennis up again.

If I could have dinner with any celebrity, it would be tennis legend Roger Federer. He is my favorite tennis player and exemplifies class and grace both on and off the court. His dedication, sportsmanship and humility are qualities I deeply admire.

Here’s a triple for you: Favorite band, favorite place you’d like to go and favorite book right now?

My favorite band is Linkin Park—it was the first band I was introduced to when I moved to the United States. I would love to visit New Zealand for its stunning views, especially as a fan of “The Lord of the Rings.” As for books, I am currently captivated by “Shoe Dog,” the memoir of Nike creator Phil Knight. In it, he emphasizes the importance of staying connected with family, regardless of how much money or success we achieve.

What would we find you doing at home this weekend?

Home improvement, and my home is just a few weeks old! I like assembling and installing things, even when my wife asks, “Why don’t you just hire someone to do that?” My wife and I are getting ready to welcome a baby in the coming months, so we’re making changes for our growing family.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, my Cockapoo pup, Chikoo, named after a super sweet Indian fruit. He’s a cuddle baby and likes to play all the time. Although he loves people, he’s a great guard dog. My wife teaches him lots of tricks.
